If your bunion is making everyday activities — even just walking — painful, you might wonder what role orthotics play. Can they correct your bunion? That’s the question we answer in this blog. Read on to find out.

If you’ve noticed a painful bump forming at the base of your big toe, you’re not alone. About one in five people — that’s 20% — have some degree of bump there. This bump is likely a bunion, a common foot condition that can make everyday activities uncomfortable.

A bunion isn’t a growth or a tumor. Officially known as hallux valgus, a bunion happens when your big toe joint becomes misaligned. This misalignment causes your joint to stick out and forms a noticeable bump that may become red, sore, or inflamed.

Bunions are usually caused by a mixture of genetics, poor footwear choices, and foot structure, and they tend to worsen over time if not managed properly.

At NYC Foot & Ankle Center in the Manhattan Valley neighborhood of the Upper West Side, our team of providers understands how frustrating bunions can be. One of the first questions many of our patients ask is: Can orthotics fix this?

Take a moment as we answer this question in depth.

Can orthotics fix bunions?

Here’s the truth: Orthotics won’t reverse or cure a bunion, but they can help slow its progression and make your symptoms more manageable.

Custom orthotics are specialized shoe inserts designed to improve how your foot moves and carries weight. When used in the early stages of bunion development, orthotics can:

  • Relieve pressure on your bunion joint
  • Correct abnormal foot mechanics that contribute to bunion development
  • Reduce pain and inflammation, especially during walking or exercise

So, while orthotics won’t make the bump go away, they’re a great nonsurgical option for reducing discomfort and preventing further deformity.

When are orthotics most effective?

Like many foot conditions, bunions are classified by level of severity. This is typically determined by the angle between your big toe and the first metatarsal bone, which connects your toe to the rest of your foot.

Orthotics are most effective in the early stages of a bunion when your joint has only slightly shifted and your pain remains manageable.

If your bunion has progressed significantly or you’re having trouble walking, you may need to consider other treatments, including bunion surgery. If surgery is required, our team offers advanced and minimally invasive options, such as arthroscopy, to correct any misalignments.

Still, even after surgery, orthotics can support your long-term foot health and recovery.

Should you get custom or over-the-counter orthotics?

Over-the-counter inserts may offer short-term comfort, but they’re not designed for your unique foot shape. At NYC Foot & Ankle Center, we often recommend custom orthotics because they’re molded specifically to your feet.

Here’s another reason to consider orthotics: Bunions don’t just affect your big toe. They can also develop on your pinky toe, a condition known as a bunionette. Custom orthotics can be designed to support both areas.

When to seek a podiatrist about your bunion?

If you’re living with bunion pain, don’t wait until it gets severe. Our foot and ankle specialists can evaluate your condition and determine the best approach for relief, whether it’s orthotics, physical therapy, or surgical options.
